Regolo Ricci is a self-taught artist who works in oils and watercolours. Regolo Ricci is a Canadian artist whose paintings are in collections throughout the world. He was the youngest painter ever to have exhibited with the Kaspar Gallery in Toronto's Yorkville ( a gallery best known for its well-publicized purchases of the Group of Seven). He is completely self-taught having left the University of Toronto when he found his interests were with the fine arts and no longer with the study of English Literature and the Classics. As well as painting he has also illustrated 11 books and was nominated for the prestigious Governor General's Award in 2000. Regolo Ricci paints primarily in oils but has also mastered watercolour and pen and ink. He is best known for his portrayals of the landscape of Southern Ontario, with an emphasis on the areas North and West of Toronto and along the Niagara Escarpment. He began documenting the disappearing rural Ontario as far back as 1980 and continues his search for the remnants of the past and for the colours and textures of brick and wood. As well he has always done townscapes and has seen the major changes that have transformed completely cities like Toronto. He still searches for the small cottages and homes in the less developed urban areas of Toronto, and explores the villages and towns around the Metropolitan area. Along with landscape and still-life he enjoys a well-deserved reputation for his paintings of people. Regolo combines in his work a profound reverence for the old masters with a strong desire to explore the complexities of the modern world: he wants his paintings to express some of the 21st century's contradictory attitudes, such as its desire for nostalgia on the one hand and, on the other, its passionate yearning for the new. Technically, in his oil paintings, Regolo paints his work in layers rather than in one quick attempt, finding that for him the first impression is not nearly as important as the final accumulated statement in oils that takes him so much time to produce. He wants to paint with his head as well as with his heart. His paintings are to be seen at the Dunn Street Gallery in Oakville, Ontario.
